Biography

Walter Silva, also known as Pica-Pau, was born in São Paulo on March 7, 1933. He began his professional career in the 1950s, working as a radio announcer, presenter, and journalist at major radio and television networks in the country, such as Rádio Cultura, Rádio Nacional, and TV Tupi. As a prominent figure in communication, he covered the historic Bossa Nova Festival at Carnegie Hall and made history with pioneer programs in the disc jockey format.

In addition to his work in the press, Walter Silva played a fundamental role in Brazilian music production by working directly with great names of our culture. He was responsible for producing Chico Buarque's first LP, as well as participating in the creation of the emblematic album Dois na Bossa, recorded by Elis Regina, Jair Rodrigues, and Jongo Trio. His artistic sensitivity also allowed him to discover and launch essential talents for MPB, such as Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, and Secos e Molhados.

Walter Silva's legacy also extended to the artistic direction of record labels, the creation of shows, and literary journalism, culminating in the publication of books about Brazilian popular music. He passed away on February 27, 2009, leaving an indelible mark on the history of national culture and in the defense of human rights.
