Biography

Wanderley Monteiro is a renowned Brazilian singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, born on December 18, 1961, in Rio de Janeiro. His musical career, spanning over four decades, is marked by a deep connection with samba and Brazilian popular culture. From a young age, he showed an aptitude for music, learning to play the cavaquinho in his childhood, an instrument that would become his trademark. His journey led him to frequent the samba circles of Rio de Janeiro, where he honed his talent and established important musical partnerships.

Throughout his career, Wanderley Monteiro has been a member of groups such as Copa 4 and Sensa-Samba, in addition to being one of the youngest songwriters to emerge from the "Pagode da Tamarineira", linked to the Cacique de Ramos carnival bloc. His skill as a cavaquinho player led him to accompany great names in Brazilian music, such as Dona Ivone Lara, Monarco, Nelson Sargento, Wilson Moreira, and Beth Carvalho, who recorded his composition "Vida de Compositor". This partnership with Beth Carvalho was fundamental in consolidating his name in the music scene.

Wanderley Monteiro is also known for his work as a composer of samba-enredo, having won four titles for the Portela Samba School and one for Madureira. His song "Água de Chuva no Mar", in partnership with Álvaro Maciel, became a major hit in the voice of Beth Carvalho. With a discography that includes albums like "Vida de Compositor" (2004) and "Consagração" (2012), Wanderley Monteiro continues to be an active figure in the samba scene, releasing new works and participating in projects that celebrate the genre, such as the album "O Samba Espera" (2024), in collaboration with his son Alan Monteiro.
