Biography
Carlos Walker Soares Luna, known professionally as Wauke, was born in Salvador, Bahia, on March 13, 1955. His father, Walker Rodrigues Luna, was a banker and poet, and his mother, Maria Soares Luna, was a pianist who graduated from the Bahia Conservatory of Music. Wauke lived in Rio de Janeiro until he was nine years old, when his family relocated to São Paulo and later to Santos.
Wauke's musical career began to gain traction in the late 1970s. In 1977, he released his first single with the songs "Alfazema" and "Dizem," the latter a collaboration with poet Gílson Fontes. "Alfazema" achieved national success after being included in the soundtrack of the Rede Globo telenovela "O Espigão." This led to appearances on various television programs and the recording of two music videos for "Fantástico," a popular Sunday night show on Rede Globo.
In 1987, Wauke released his album "Onda," which featured collaborations with notable Brazilian musicians such as Nico Assumpção on bass, Carlos Bala on drums, Ricardo Silveira on guitar, Luiz Avellar on keyboards, Marçal on percussion, and Marcio Montarroyos on trumpet. The album showcased his unique style within the MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) genre. Wauke's work is characterized by its lyrical depth and melodic richness, often exploring themes of love and everyday life, reminiscent of other MPB artists like Djavan and Gal Costa.
