Biography

Xerém (Pedro de Alcântara Filho) and Bentinho (José Antônio Vono Filho) formed a highly successful Brazilian musical duo, primarily active from 1939 to 1960. Xerém, born in Baturité, Ceará, was a versatile artist, known for his skills as a gaitista (harmonica player), singer, and composer. Bentinho, originally from Santa Rita de Sapucaí, Minas Gerais, was a graduate in industrial chemistry who also found his passion in music. Their partnership began in 1939, following Xerém's previous collaborations, including with his sister Nadir as Xerém e Tapuia.

The duo gained significant recognition for their performances on radio programs, such as Cesar Ladeira's show on Rádio Mayrink Veiga, and for their numerous recordings. They released a substantial body of work, primarily on RCA Victor, featuring genres like calango and moda de viola. Some of their notable songs include "Chale encarnado," "Baião da viola," "Avoa jacutinga," and "Moda do casamento." Their music often reflected rural Brazilian themes and traditions, contributing to the rich tapestry of Brazilian folk and sertaneja music.

Beyond their musical endeavors, both artists had broader artistic connections. Xerém also had a career in acting, appearing in films like "Abacaxi azul" and "Vigilante Rodoviário." Bentinho, while pursuing his chemistry studies, was immersed in the artistic milieu of Rio de Janeiro, even residing with the family of famous singers Linda and Dircinha Batista. The duo's enduring legacy lies in their contribution to Brazilian popular music, with their songs continuing to be appreciated for their authenticity and charm.
