Biography
Yana Purim is a Brazilian singer and songwriter, born in Rio de Janeiro. She is the younger sister of the renowned jazz singer Flora Purim. Yana began her artistic career in 1977 in California, performing in venues such as Keystone Corner and Roxy. She was part of a vocal quartet directed by Luiz Eça, which also included her sister Flora. Purim gained recognition as a singer in 1984 after participating in a jazz festival in Los Angeles. Her debut album, "For a Distant Love," co-produced with Arnaldo DeSouteiro, was released in 1984 and featured collaborations with Airto Moreira and Luiz Bonfá, charting on American music charts.
Throughout her career, Yana Purim has released several albums, including "Yana Purim" (1982), "Harvest Time" (1987), "Bird of Brazil" (1989), and "Brasilyanas, Vol. 1" (1994). Her music often blends jazz, bossa nova, and Brazilian popular music. She has also written lyrics for compositions by various artists and has been praised for her clear voice and relaxed delivery, often compared to her sister Flora's but with a more traditional repertoire. Purim has lived in Paris, France, for many years, continuing to release music, such as her 2023 album "Depois do Amor."
