Biography
Zaira Cavalcanti, born Zaíra Baltazar Cavalcanti in Santa Maria on October 1, 1913, was a prominent Brazilian singer and actress whose career spanned several decades on stage and screen. As the daughter of a military officer, she began her artistic journey at a remarkably young age in 1927, quickly establishing herself in the vibrant theatrical and musical circles of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, she performed in numerous musical revues and theatrical productions, sharing the cultural spotlight with contemporaries of the golden age of Brazilian radio and stage.
In 1938, Cavalcanti embarked on a pioneering solo international tour across Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Venezuela, where she captivated audiences by performing classic Brazilian and South American repertoire. Her international acclaim led to further opportunities, including a notable role in the Argentine musical film Luna de Miel en Río around 1940, alongside Argentine star Niní Marshall. Her theatrical credits included diverse revues and plays such as A Bailarina do Casino, Os Quindins de Iaiá, and later in life, a production of Bodas de Sangue in 1973.
In her later years, following her retirement from the active performing arts scene, she resided at the historic Retiro dos Artistas in Rio de Janeiro, a sanctuary for retired Brazilian performers. She passed away there on September 11, 1981, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile performer who helped internationalize Brazilian music. Her artistic trajectory parallels those of pioneering vocalists and musical actresses of her era, remaining an important figure in the history of Brazilian variety theater.
