Biography

José Homero Bettio, widely known as Zé Bettio, was a prominent Brazilian radio broadcaster, singer, accordionist, and composer. Born in Promissão in 1926, he spent his youth working and playing music before establishing himself in São Paulo, where he initially worked as a shoemaker and performed in local groups and farm dances. His transition to radio occurred serendipitously when he improvised commercial advertisements at Rádio Difusora de Guarulhos, leading to a legendary broadcasting career defined by his humor and unique connection with listeners.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Zé Bettio achieved massive popularity, notably at Rádio Record and Rádio Capital, where his immense audience reach made him an iconic figure in Brazilian radio and a vital champion of sertanejo music. He played a crucial role in launching and popularizing the careers of renowned sertanejo acts such as Milionário & José Rico and Chitãozinho & Xororó. Alongside his broadcasting success, he recorded various albums and singles showcasing his accordion playing and compositions.

After decades of shaping the soundwaves and championing traditional rural music, Zé Bettio retired from radio in 2009 and spent his final years in the interior of São Paulo. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 92, leaving behind a profound legacy as one of the greatest names in the history of Brazilian radio. His contributions deeply intertwined his name with artists like Arlindo Bettio, Teddy Vieira, and the generation of musicians he supported.
