Biography

The duo Zé do Cedro e João do Pinho, formed by brothers José Aparecido Fernandes (Zé do Cedro) and João dos Santos Fernandes (João do Pinho), was an exponent of Brazilian caipira music. Born in São Paulo, in Barra Dourada and Mendes Paulista, respectively, the brothers showed an early interest in music, influenced by their parents, who were also viola singers. The trajectory of the duo Zé do Cedro e João do Pinho is marked by a strong connection to sertanejo roots and the authenticity of their compositions.

The official formation of the duo Zé do Cedro e João do Pinho occurred in the mid-1970s, after several previous formations with other brothers. In 1979, the duo gained notoriety by winning the Arizona Festival of Violeiros in Barretos (SP), which opened doors for the recording of their first LP, "A Dupla da Madeira", the following year. Throughout their career, they released several albums, with a highlight on "Jacutinga", which became one of their biggest hits. Their music portrayed the daily life of the country man, with poetic lyrics and striking melodies.

Unfortunately, the musical partnership was interrupted in 1999 with the passing of João do Pinho, a victim of a brain tumor. Zé do Cedro, after the loss of his brother, continued his musical career with other partners, such as João Pinheiro and Tião do Pinho, always honoring the legacy of the original duo. The work of Zé do Cedro e João do Pinho remains alive in the memory of caipira music enthusiasts, standing as a landmark in the rich history of Brazilian popular music.
