Biography

Zé Geraldo, born José Geraldo Juste in Rodeiro, Minas Gerais, is a pivotal figure in the Brazilian "Rock Rural" movement, blending folk, rock, and traditional country influences. Originally aspiring to be a professional footballer, a life-altering bus accident in 1966 redirected his path toward music. During his recovery, he learned his first guitar chords and began composing, eventually moving to Santos and joining the band Blow Up (formerly The Black Cats). In the early 1970s, he lived alongside the legendary soul singer Tim Maia, a period that preceded his rise in the national folk-rock scene.

His breakthrough came in the late 1970s through the competitive festival circuit. After winning a competition in Ilha Solteira, he met composer Lúcio Barbosa and recorded the iconic song "Cidadão," which became his career-defining hit and a national anthem for the working class. Shortly after, he gained massive popularity through the MPB Shell festivals, performing "Rio Doce"—which received high praise from Luiz Gonzaga—and "Milho aos pombos." These performances solidified his reputation as a voice for the Brazilian hinterlands.

Moving away from major labels in the mid-1980s, Zé Geraldo embraced an independent career, building a loyal following that frequently overlaps with fans of Raul Seixas. His music effectively bridges the gap between the "viola caipira" traditions represented by Tião Carreiro and urban rock aesthetics. Throughout his long career, he has collaborated extensively with peers such as Renato Teixeira, Geraldo Azevedo, and Zeca Baleiro, while also fostering the career of his daughter, the singer-songwriter Nô Stopa.
