Biography

Zé & Zilda was a prominent Brazilian musical duo known as the Dupla da Harmonia, formed by married couple José Gonçalves and Zilda Gonçalves. Before forming the duo, Zé da Zilda had already established himself as a successful composer, collaborating with legendary figures of Brazilian music such as Cartola and Ataulfo Alves. Their musical journey together took off after radio presenter Paulo Roberto dubbed them Zé da Zilda and Zilda do Zé, leading to performances across radio and circuses before releasing their debut record in 1944.

Following the passing of José Gonçalves in 1954, Zilda continued to honor his memory and their shared musical legacy. In 1955, she released tribute sambas written in collaboration with Adolfo Macedo and Airton Borges, keeping the spirit of their work alive. Their contributions to samba and carnival culture remain an important part of Brazil's musical heritage, sitting alongside contemporaries of the era like Orlando Silva and Aracy de Almeida.

The duo's legacy is deeply intertwined with the golden age of Brazilian radio and traditional samba. Zé da Zilda's collaborations with Cartola, including hits like "Não Quero Mais," showcased his enduring talent as a songwriter within the Mangueira community. Together, Zé & Zilda left an indelible mark on the landscape of Brazilian popular music and carnival traditions.
