Biography

Zilo e Zalo were one of the most emblematic and beloved Brazilian country music duos, formed by brothers Aníbio Pereira de Sousa (Zilo) and Belizário Pereira de Sousa (Zalo). Born in Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo, in the interior of São Paulo, the duo began their career in the mid-1950s, performing on local radio stations and in circuses. Their harmonious vocal talent and skill with instruments such as the acoustic guitar and viola soon made them stand out in the traditional caipira music scene.

Throughout nearly five decades of their career, Zilo e Zalo became a reference in traditional sertanejo music, with a repertoire that valued rural traditions, including modas de viola, querumanas, and cururus. Their songs portrayed the daily life of the countryside with authenticity and simplicity, winning over a loyal audience and paving the way for future generations of sertanejo artists. The duo recorded more than 30 LPs and dozens of singles, consolidating their legacy in Brazilian discography.

Recognized as "The Enchanting Voices of the Sertão", Zilo e Zalo left behind an important musical collection. The duo dissolved with the passing of Zilo in 2002. Zalo continued his musical career, even singing with his son Renato, and passed away in 2012. The work of Zilo e Zalo remains alive in the memory of their fans and in the preservation of authentic Brazilian sertanejo music, and they are frequently remembered alongside duos like Tonico e Tinoco and Tião Carreiro e Pardinho.
