Biography

Ziraldo Alves Pinto was an iconic Brazilian cartoonist, caricaturist, journalist, painter, and children's book author. Born in Caratinga, Minas Gerais, he rose to national prominence in the 1950s and 1960s through his work with major publications like Folha da Manhã and O Cruzeiro, eventually becoming one of the founding figures of the influential opposition tabloid O Pasquim during the military dictatorship.

Beyond his journalistic contributions, Ziraldo cemented his legacy in Brazilian culture by creating revolutionary works such as A Turma do Pererê, the first entirely color comic book series produced by a single Brazilian author. In 1980, he achieved massive editorial success with his children's novel O Menino Maluquinho, which became a cornerstone of Brazilian children's literature and was later adapted into films and television series. Throughout his prolific career, he engaged closely with prominent cultural and political figures of his time, including Oscar Niemeyer and Jaguar.

Ziraldo passed away in Rio de Janeiro in April 2024 at the age of 91, leaving behind an indelible mark on Brazilian arts, literature, and journalism. His enduring characters and profound dedication to free expression continue to resonate through generations of readers and artists across Brazil.
